May is Picnic Month

1 May 2009

Organisers of Lancashire’s Picnic Month at Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board (LBTB), are hoping the good weather will continue throughout the month of May as the beautiful countryside, high profile events and attractions entice visitors and Lancastrians into the great outdoors.

Just pack a basket full of Lancashire produce and set off to discover the many sights and locations that Lancashire has to offer. For inspiration head for visitlancashire.com for links to local food suppliers, a downloadable map of 30 different picnic spots, itineraries for a great day out (incorporating a picnic), plus a free to enter prize draw to win a superb picnic hamper, full of familiar, regional treats.

Picnics are a fantastic opportunity for families and friends to get together so why not organise a fun day out at the newly-opened Clitheroe Castle on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 May, and take part in National Family Week’s Guinness World Record-Breaking attempt at the largest simultaneous picnic?  Organised by Ribble Valley Council in association with LBTB, Lancashire’s big picnic at the Castle will be one of 100s of picnics being held across the country, with an official head count at each location contributing to the national total.

LBTB is also working with 60 self-catering establishments across the county, to introduce visitors to Lancashire food and drink, via complimentary picnic bags for staying guests. This year, building upon last year’s popular picnic boxes and in response to customer feedback, the items will be presented in eco-friendly recycled paper bags each containing Chorley Cakes, Bowland Water, Stockley’s Cinder Toffee and Lancashire Tea .

New this year will be the inclusion of a special leaflet promoting picnic sites and over a dozen independent farm shops, with vouchers from Barton Grange Garden Centre, Bashall Barn. Wallings Farm Centre, Homestead Farm Shop and Huntley’s of Samlesbury to encourage visitors to buy locally.

Barbara Howorth, LBTB Taste Lancashire Executive commenting on Picnic Month said;

 “Lancashire food and drink is being championed across the UK in foodie publications, recipe books and travel stories. This special month brings together our beautiful countryside with Lancashire’s superb locally grown produce – in one brilliant excuse to indulge in traditional picnic fun while supporting local producers.”
