40 Miles of Unforgettable Food

Celebrity food writer Philippa James cooks up a treat on Lancaster Canal

British Waterways teamed up with Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board (LBTB) and celebrity cook and food writer Philippa James to launch ‘Forty miles of unforgettable food’ on Wednesday 5 August 2009 at Guys Thatched Hamlet, Bilsborrow.

As one of the most scenic canals in the country the Lancaster Canal provided the ideal setting for the wonderful range of local produce and high quality dining experiences on offer at the pubs and restaurants, alongside or close to the canal – all of which have achieved the Taste Lancashire quality marque.

Philippa James showcased some of this wonderful local produce with a cookery demonstration at the canalside using an array of tasters from some of the local producers, including Dewlay, J Atkinson’s & Co, Pennine Way Preserves and Gracemire Lamb

British Waterways and Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board are encouraging visitors to combine a visit to a great waterside beauty spot with fantastic watering holes. 90,000 leaflets have been  produced and mailed directly to carefully selected households close to the Lancaster Canal. Most of the eating establishments listed are also offering a 20% off dining offer for the period of the campaign (August to November).

Alan Carter, Business Development Manager, British Waterways North West said: “The Lancaster Canal is  one of the most scenic canals in the country and is a great place to escape from everyday life.  British Waterways are delighted to team up with Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board to promote the canal and the numerous restaurants and cosy canal side pubs which are situated along the canal with this unique offer.”

Mike Wilkinson, Chief Executive, Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board added: “This partnership provides a wonderful opportunity to explore some of our most scenic waterways and forty miles of unforgettable Lancashire food. Establishments displaying the Taste Lancashire marque can be counted on to provide a great quality food experience and for customers who care about sustainability, additional pleasure comes from knowing that the food on their plate has been grown locally and supports producers in the Lancashire.”
