Lancashire’s Hall of Fame – You decide

Monday, 10th March 2014

Marketing Lancashire is calling on all Lancastrians to help create Lancashire’s Hall of Fame as partof a VisitEngland national campaign to find the country’s ‘great and the good’.

From the country’s most notorious witch hunt in Pendle to spearheading the Industrial Revolution, Lancashire has played a huge part in the shaping of England’s history.  Add to this a wealth of famous talents from the late, great comedian Eric Morecambe, to acting stalwart Sir Ian McKellen; unique attractions such as Blackpool Tower, Lancaster’s Ashton Memorial and Pennine Lancashire’s Panopticans; and claims to fame such as Dunsop Bridge being the ‘centre of the kingdom’, Garstang being the world’s first Fairtrade town and Lancaster-born scientist inventing the term ‘Dinosaur’ and you have the makings of an impressive Hall of Fame.

Marketing Lancashire, the county’s destination management organisation, is championing a campaign launched last month by VisitEngland and inviting the public to submit nominations on in the following categories; The Great, The Good and the Notorious; Inventions & Discoveries; Food & Drink; History & Heritage; Culture & Entertainment and Sport & Leisure. The deadline for submissions is 23 March after which Visit England will draw up a shortlist that then goes to public vote. VisitEngland’s ultimate Hall of Fame will be announced on 23rd April, St George’s Day.

Ruth Connor, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire, commenting on the campaign,

“For Lancashire to feature in VisitEngland’s Hall of Fame we need residents and visitors to add examples of the many great achievements, unique landmarks and icons of Lancashire culture. There is so much to celebrate and share about Lancashire and this is a fantastic opportunity to show the world what we’re most proud of and the things that make us uniquely Lancastrian.”

Lady Cobham, VisitEngland’s Chairman, said: “From being the birthplace of rugby and inventing afternoon tea to being the home of the world’s first national public museum and discovering a king’s skeleton in a car park, England has so much of which to be proud. We hope the Hall of Fame app will inspire people to explore the brilliant, fascinating and unusual destinations on our doorstep, as well as unearthing some interesting English trivia at the same time.’

Anyone who adds information to the website will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a weekend break away. Nominations can be submitted at, and on VisitEngland’s Facebook page.  You can also follow updates on Twitter using #EnglandsHOF the deadline for entries is 23 March 2014.
