Put Lancashire Day in Your Diary

26 October 2012

Nelson town centre is gearing up for its next big event – a celebration of Lancashire Day AND the Nelson Christmas lights switch-on!

Both events will take place on Saturday 24th November, starting at 11am.

Councillor Paul White, who represents tourism in Pendle, said:

“Nelson’s event is officially the largest Lancashire Day celebrations in the whole of the county!

“This year on Saturday 24th November the town centre will be buzzing with street entertainment, children’s rides and an outdoor market.

“It’s sure to attract plenty of Lancashire folk to Nelson for a celebration of their roots.

“Make a date with Nelson and put Lancashire Day in your diary.”

Nelson Area Committee and Nelson Town Council are both supporting the events.

Councillor Eileen Ansar, Chair of Nelson Town Council, said:

“Nelson Area Committee and Nelson Town Council are pleased to have helped fund the Christmas lights switch-on event and the Lancashire Day celebrations.

“We’ve brought forward the time of the Christmas lights switch-on this year to boost the benefits to town centre businesses.

“One thing’s for sure: Saturday 24th November promises to be a truly wonderful day in Nelson’s calendar.”

A Lancashire Day celebration just wouldn’t be complete without some traditional food from the county.

So the popular Lancashire market will be returning to Nelson town centre.

There’ll be stalls selling local produce such as cheese, black pudding, potted shrimps, fudge and chocolate.

All the stalls are free – if you’d like to have one, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Performances lined up for the day so far include the East Lancashire Concert Band, morris dancers and the Lancashire Society who’ll be singing local dialect songs.

Also performing hourly throughout the Lancashire Day event will be Nelson’s own Town Crier, Councillor Tony Beckett.

He’ll declare the event open at 11am, then read the official Lancashire Day proclamation every hour.

Nelson library will once again be running their popular family history workshops, helping Lancashire folk trace back their roots.

And new for this year, the library is hosting a Cotton Queens exhibition about the 1930s tradition of cotton towns, such as Nelson, entering into the regional competition to crown a female mill worker ‘Cotton Queen’.

A road train will be offering children rides around the town centre, and everyone will have the chance to step inside a life sized snow globe and have their picture taken.

And the popular free town centre ice rink will be making a welcome return.

This year the town’s Christmas lights will be switched on at the earlier time of 5pm, following a procession of lanterns created by local schoolchildren.
