Summary of Results

In November 2011, the number of overnight trips taken in England was 14% higher than in November 2010, the sixth consecutive monthly increase.

Considering the period from January to November 2011, 7% more trips were taken than in the same period of 2010, while the amount spent rose by 12%, reflecting both the increased volume of trips and an inflation rate (CPI) of between 4% and 5% through most of the year.

Business travel was one of the main drivers of growth last year, with an increase of 16% in trip volumes up to the end of November, taking this measure to its highest level since the start of the current survey, though a trend to shorter trips means that the number of nights spent away from home on business remains lower than in the equivalent period in 2006-8.

Holiday travel grew steadily throughout the year, and with a 5% increase in the number of trips taken between January and November, volumes are second only to 2009, while the amount spent has increased by 10% over the period.
