LCC Call to Support Small Business Saturday

3 December 2013

The leader of Lancashire County Council is calling on people to support local companies as part of Small Business Saturday UK, which takes place on 7 December.

County Councillor Jennifer Mein, leader of the county council, said: "Small Business Saturday UK aims to celebrate the fantastic businesses in Lancashire and encourage communities to support them at a key time in the shopping calendar, as we approach Christmas.

"Lancashire produce is quite rightly seen as among the best in the country and many of our businesses are providing high-quality goods and services. It's our view that we have companies here in the county that stand proudly alongside the best.

"Nationally three-quarters of enterprises have four employees or less and small businesses are a significant part of our county's economy. In Ribble Valley for example, almost 80% of enterprises have four employees or less.

"Supporting local businesses brings money into the county economy and creates local jobs. So why not go out and support your local small businesses on 7 December?"

The county council's Creative Lancashire team have joined forces with Preston BID and Preston City Council to encourage people to do business locally and support the high street.

A series of business support events are being hosted in the run up to and following Small Business Saturday. For more details, visit www.preston.gov.uk/smallbusiness.

BID’s Lancashire Christmas Market returns to Preston Flag Market on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December showcasing the best of Lancashire’s producers.

There are 4.8 million small businesses in the UK and over 14 million p! eople work in them. Nationally, just 1% of enterprises have more than 100 employees – similar percentages exist in Preston and South Ribble.

The Small Business Saturday campaign started in America. Spending in small shops on the day rose as well as leading to a long-term increase in customers. It also helped local small business to come together and champion their vital role in local communities.
