WW1-inspired drama at Preston Harris Library

6 October 2014

The story of one woman's war told through letters to her friends is the inspiration behind a brand-new 30-minute drama to be performed at the Harris Library in Preston on Friday 10 October.

' "My Dearest Girls" – Helen's Story' has been created by acclaimed writer and solo performer Francesca Millican-Slater.

The piece is based on the real letters sent between six young Shropshire women – a farmer’s wife, a farmer's daughter, a nurse, an office worker, a carpet factory worker and a dance teacher – from 1917 to 1920.

Against the background of WW1, the women exchanged a series of fascinating round-robin letters.

The letters reveal details of their everyday lives and include gossip, a hint of scandal, tales of dancing for royalty and skating in the moonlight, fiancés on the frontline and how to feed 100 chickens while on rations.

Two of the girls remained in Shropshire, while the others moved to London, Birmingham, Bury and deepest Suffolk. As a result, the letters offer views of the war years from towns, cities and the countryside.

The show is suitable for everyone aged 10 and over. Performances will take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Tickets cost £2 each and are available from the library on the day (cash only).

Alternatively, people can call 07585 983967 and leave a message with their name, mobile phone number and how many tickets are required. They can then collect their tickets and pay in cash at the library.

' "My Dearest Girls" – Helen's Story' is part of 'Remembering WW1'. This is a special season of commemorative performances for the centenary of WW1, and is oganised by Lancashire County Council and Spot On, a rural touring arts network.
