Hemingway’s Vintage Festival Returns 2014

25 February 2014

The Hemingway family’s Vintage By the Sea Festival, led by Wayne, Gerardine
and Jack Hemingway, is to return to Morecambe for a second year on
6th & 7th September.

In 2013 the Festival marked The Midland’s 80th anniversary and attracted over 7,000 thousand visitors to the town. The Hemingway team has since been
working towards returning for another successful event this year.

In 2013 the festival was a one-day event and this year organisers are already programming a weekend extravaganza. Whether your thing is swing, rockabilly, mod, soul, funk, disco, ska, film, art or design, or if you just want to dress up and get an authentic makeover for a day, the Vintage by the Sea Festival is a sensual delight, a big dressing-up box, a collector’s dream and a joyous creative
feast for all ages. For one glamorous weekend the music, fashion, film, art, design and dance from the 1920s to the 1980s that has made Britain the world’s creative and cultural hot bed is celebrated.

The fantastic setting of Morecambe’s seafront will provide the backdrop and be transformed into a multi-venue playground where, visitors can ‘learn the dances’, take in specially curated live  performances, exclusive DJ sets, catwalk shows, brilliantly conceived food and cocktails, or take advantage of the decade specific hair and beauty makeovers and all the wonderful vintage shopping on offer.

New events for this year include a vintage cycle ride and a Vintage Pooch Parade! On Saturday 6th the RAF has also confirmed that a Lancaster Bomber will perform a fly past of the festival!

Backed by Lancaster City and Morecambe Town Council the Festival will offer a packed weekend, with something for everyone, combining a mix of dancing, music, fashion, glamour, film, classic cars, delicious street food, creative workshops, kid’s activities, street theatre, a vintage fairground, vintage  bus tours and an eclectic vintage and up-cycled market place to browse vintage treasures.

The weekend’s programme will provide a free festival of entertainment for local residents and visitors to the town to experience one of the most unique places to celebrate all things vintage.

In addition to the free programme, this year will see the return of some of the popular ticketed events including The Torch Club, an unforgettable night of 1930s and 40s glamour and afternoon tea at the Midland Hotel.

A night of Northern Soul, funk and disco at The Soul Casino, a night of dance from the 80s and 90s at The Warehouse set in Morecambe’s beautiful Winter Gardens and a celebration of all things Rock N Roll with Let it Rock at the Platform.

The festival organisers are calling on local people and businesses to get involved to make it bigger and better than last year. They are looking for local artists, vintage traders, classic vehicle owners, market & food stallholders and community groups to contact them to be involved.

Local crafters are also on the wish list to help advise and run creative classes and workshops so that visitors can learn a new skill or develop a creative talent or revive an old one. Interested parties are asked to send their details to [email protected] so that organisers can contact them and discuss how they might become involved.

Tickets for many of the events will be on sale from midday on Monday 3 March and can be purchased by visiting the Vintage website www.vintagefestival.co.uk/events/vintage-by-the-sea or by calling The Midland Hotel 08456 015478 for accommodation.

Wayne Hemingway said: “It’s six months now till Morecambe’s promenade will be turned into a Vintage Wonderland. We have some wonderfully evocative music, fashion, kids activities beauty, film, art, design and cocktails and food planned and the Vintage team can’t wait to put our dancing shoes on. So get your tickets and come and join us!

“The great thing about Vintage By The Sea in Morecambe is that even when all the tickets for the nightclubs and dinner dances have gone – there will be still plenty of workshops , street food , classic cars , vintage sellers, a music stage, an aerial flypast , kid’s events , rides and wonderful eye candy (and those views to die for , across the beach and the magnificent Morecambe Bay) to make a for
a great weekend out. At this stage we need the area’s creative folk to come and help us put this on and make it a weekend to remember.”

Councillor Ron Sands, Cabinet member with responsibility for leisure and tourism, said: “Although it is still some months away, I am already incredibly excited and looking forward to what is shaping up to be a fabulous weekend. It promises to be one of those events, which transcends the generations and reaches out to a new audience to fall in love with Morecambe and come back again and again. Last year proved that our wonderful resort is the perfect location for an event such as this and to have Wayne and his team back is a tremendous coup.”
