Showzam! Success

3 March 2014

More than 30,000 people visited Showzam! Blackpool’s festival celebrating Circus, Magic and New Variety.

Showzam! Central, the hub of the celebrations during the 10-day festival, attracted 21,600 people while audiences at the event’s 60 plus ticketed shows and tours attracted in excess of 10,000.

And while the figures are pleasing news to VisitBlackpool, the force behind Showzam!, they do not even begin to reflect the number of people in the town watching the free live street theatre performances that took place each day.

Cllr Graham Cain, Blackpool Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure, said: “It is quite clear from these figures that Showzam! was a huge success this year.

“This is a fabulous family festival and continues to attract both residents and visitors to the resort at a time when seaside towns are not particularly busy.

“We pride ourselves in Blackpool on offering something to the visitor throughout the year and the fact that more than 30,000 people attended Showzam! events this year is testament to the fact we are doing this and that there is a calling for it.”

Final details of all ticket sales are not available yet but an average of 2,160 people walked into Showzam! Central each day – one day it actually attracted 3,010 people. 5,550 people saw B The Underwater Bubble Show in The Blackpool Tower Circus, 1,000 people attended the Carnival Ball, 930 people took part in workshops at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and more than 1,800 people watched The Sooty Show at the Opera House.

Visitors to Showzam! flocked from all over the UK and comments were very positive with most saying they plan to visit again.

Comments included:

“Great for the kids – keep it up!”

“Second day I’ve brought my daughter. She LOVES it and wants to come every day.”

“We came especially for Showzam! as we’ve been before and it was fantastic!”

“A pleasure to watch. Everybody is talented and amazing.”

Cllr Cain added: “An incredible amount of work goes into Showzam! and it is clear that this is appreciated by so many people who travel from so far to not only take part but to enjoy the events on offer too.”
