The Blackpool Tower’s ‘Walk of Faith’ Glass Floor

14 July 2014

Blackpool’s tourism season has kicked off with a boom this year with over 3 million adults visiting the resort between January and April. This is over 600,000 more visitors than the same period in 2013, which is fantastic news for local residents and businesses.

Better still, visitor satisfaction levels have also seen significant improvement, rising from 75% last year to 89% in 2014, according to the independent Omnibus survey.

One of the biggest attractions in the resort is The Blackpool Tower which was built in 1894 and is an incredible 518 ft tall. And in anticipation for the summer’s festivities, the infamous “Walk of Faith” glass floor has been primed and protected with the help of Lancashire based firm Lustalux.

Lustalux has been supplying and installing commercial window film, blinds, vinyl graphics and manifestation across the UK for over 20 years and they have been providing the scratch resistant anti-vandal safety film for the glass floor since March 2012.

Richard Lancaster, Managing Director of Lustalux, said: “We’ve been working with The Blackpool Tower for a number of years now and we still get asked how our team get up there to put the window film on the glass floor. And every time we say, we get up via the public lift just like everyone else!

“When we first told everyone about doing the work our insurers immediately phoned us as they thought we were working on the outside- they were going to raise our insurance premiums. We had to assurethem that it was completely safe, as the film is applied in the public area on the inside.”

The “Walk of Faith” glass floor requires window film to be applied three times a year to ensure it is safe and fully protected against shoe scuffs, scratch marks and vandalism. Reopened in 2011 following a multi-million pound refurbishment, it is unimaginable how many people have walked over the glass floor since it was first introduced.

One thing is certain- the glass floor is not for the faint hearted! Weighing at half a tonne and being made up of two sheets of solid laminated glass, the “Walk of Faith” is definitely the ideal Blackpool attraction this summer.

Fun facts:

It takes 7 years to paint the Blackpool Tower from top to bottom.

The Tower’s lifts travel 3,500 miles every year.

The Tower top closes if the wind speed exceeds 45 mph.

Whether you want to increase glass safety, provide security or reduce solar heat gain, Lustalux can help with with the industry’s most extensive range of high technology window films. Based in Preston but with regional offices in London and Scotland, they are the go-to-experts that you can trust.
