Strawberries and Steam at Queen Street Mill

18 July 2014

Queen Street Mill Textile Museum (QSM) in Harle Syke, Burnley, is celebrating the 1950s at a special event on Saturday 26 July.

'Strawberries and Steam' takes a trip back to an era when QSM was a thriving cotton-weaving mill.

From midday to 5pm, visitors of all ages will be able to see how the mill was run in the decade of the Korean War and the launch of the Sputnik satellite, meet the weavers and other mill workers, and tuck in to delicious strawberries and other summer treats.

Sarah Taylor, Lancashire County Council's museum manager at QSM, said: "The event complements our current exhibition 'Everything Under the Sun'. This is a wonderful collection of photographs of Morecambe from the middle of the twentieth century.

"In keeping with that theme, people will be able to build their very own sandcastle and follow the seaside holiday family trail around the mill."

The mill's historic engine, Peace, will be in steam throughout the afternoon, and people will be able to enjoy weaving demonstrations on Lancashire looms and the chance to see the massive 110-year-old Lancashire boilers being fired.

Admission is £3 for adults, £2 for concessions. Accompanied children and Burnley residents go free.

Car parking is free and QSM is fully accessible for disabled visitors, including people with guide dogs.
