Stirkes – Preston City Council Services

7 July 2014

Preston City Council’s services and buildings are to be affected by a national strike organised by the Local Government Unions:  Unison, Unite and GMB, which is taking place on Thursday 10 July 2014.

Arrangements for Council offices, the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Leisure Centres, Guild Hall, Cemetery & Crematorium and refuse/recycling collections are as follows:-

Council’s Offices (Preston Town Hall & Lancastria House)

All of these Council offices will be closed to the public on the 10 July.

People wanting to access Council services should use the Council’s website:  www.preston.gov.uk

The Council will also try to deal with and respond to telephone calls, but people may experience longer waiting times when calling.  The website will therefore be a much better and quicker way of contacting the Council.

Harris Museum and Art Gallery

The Harris Museum and Art Gallery will be closed to the public on the 10 July.

Fulwood and West View Leisure Centres

Both Fulwood and West View Leisure Centres will be open to the public on the 10 July, however there may be disruption to some activities due to staff shortages.

Guild Hall and Charter Theatre

There are no scheduled performances due to take place on the 10 July at the Guild Hall so the public will not be affected.

Cemetery and Crematorium

People will not be able to book funerals or cremations for Thursday 10 July at Preston Cemetery or Preston Crematorium due to the strike action.  However, the Cemetery and the Crematorium’s Books of Remembrance will be open for people who wish to pay their respects.

Refuse and Recycling

The Council will try to collect all grey (rubbish) bins on Thursday 10 July.  However, due to potential staff shortages it may not be possible to collect every bin.  If we fail to collect your bin on 10 July, please leave it out as we will attempt to collect it on either Friday 11 July or Saturday 12 July.

Commenting on the plans put in place by the Council to deal with the strike, Lorraine Norris, Chief Executive, said:-

“This is a national strike and we expect a significant number of staff will support it.  There is likely to be disruption to Council services”.
