Christmas Extravaganza set to light up Leyland!

23 November 2015

LEYLAND will be illuminated with festive cheer this Saturday as Dave Spikey switches on the Christmas lights!

Leyland Town Team and South Ribble Borough Council have worked together to improve the town’s Christmas lights and the hard work will be culminated with a Christmas festival on Hough Lane on Saturday 28 November.

Leyland Town Team is a group of businesses and independent traders based in Leyland who aim to promote and boost trade and local shopping in their town.

The project ‘Light Up Leyland’ aimed to raise money for bigger and better Christmas lights in the town.

This year’s target was £5,000 with the campaign in place to improve their funds and lights year on year.

South Ribble Borough Council, Leyland Neighbourhood Forum and other local businesses and communities provided financial support to the project.

A 2016 calendar was produced by South Ribble Borough Council, featuring past and present images of Leyland, for the Town Team to sell.

Businesses in Leyland are selling these at £5 and all proceeds will go towards the project.

Leyland Food Fayre was a great day of fundraising and several bag packing events have also been a popular fundraising activity for the team.

They have been hard at work since June to try and raise the funds needed for the Christmas lights.

Hitting their £5,000 target in November, the team worked with Blackpool Illuminations bosses to design new lights for Leyland.

Identifying Hough Lane as the first phase of the project, the team set to work planning a Christmas extravaganza to celebrate the light switch on.

Saturday 28th November will see families from the borough enjoy the fun filled day, culminating in the light switch on by comedian and actor Dave Spikey.

Live entertainment, rides, stalls and even a Santa’s grotto will help to create the Christmas spirit and the trees on Hough Lane will be adorned with seasonal decorations and lights.

Isobel Pickering, chair of Leyland Town Team said: “The Christmas festival on Saturday will be a brilliant event and one the whole of Leyland have worked extremely hard for.

“The Light Up Leyland project would not have been possible without support from the community, residents, South Ribble Borough Council and the Leyland Neighbourhood Forum.

“The aim is to improve on these lights every year through the Light Up Leyland project. We’ve had a fantastic response this year and the results will be there for everyone to enjoy on Saturday!”

The Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Mary Green will be attending the festival between 3.15pm and 4.45pm.

She said: “Everyone involved in the project, the council officers and the Town Team deserve huge praise for their work, it really is fantastic what they have achieved by working together.

“I am looking forward to meeting everyone who was involved and I will definitely enjoy the Christmas festival on Saturday.

“I urge everyone to come along and support the light switch on in Hough Lane, there’ll be plenty of fun to be had!”
