Top of the morning to you! Charlie the Chameleon goes green for St Patrick’s Day

12 March 2015

Charlie the Panther Chameleon at SEA LIFE Blackpool will be as hard to spot as a leprechaun this St. Patricks Day.

The SEA LIFE Blackpool team thought it would be nice to treat Charlie to some additional greenery to freshen up his display in readiness of the ever growing popularity of St Patricks Day, by adding some lucky shamrocks.

Charlie has been seen to curiously investigate his lucky shamrock and seems to have taken quite a shine to his new surroundings.

Panther Chameleons are Zygodactylous – this means that they have toes which face backwards and forwards which gives the foot a tongs-like appearance. These specialized feet allow the Panther Chameleon a tight grip on narrow branches. Each toe is equipped with a sharp claw to gain traction on surfaces such as bark when climbing and coupled with their camouflage, you sometimes have to look quite hard to find Charlie.

Did you know that the Panther Chameleons tongue extends at around 26 body lengths per second when it is catching prey!  You may be fooled into thinking he is being rude but he is in fact just feeding.

You can join the SEA LIFE Blackpool team daily at 10:30am to watch Charlie get his breakfast in the rainforest.  This is one time you are guaranteed to meet this friendly, ever changing colourful character.  With over 50 dazzling displays, you could spend hours marvelling at the array of beautiful creatures at SEA LIFE Blackpool.
