Freeport Fleetwood Celebrates Fylde Coast's Heritage

Wednesday, 15th April 2015

The young people of Fleetwood have donated their free time to make over their local community.

The members of the Fleetwood Detachment Army Cadets and the Fleetwood Sea Cadets braved some wet weather to help paint the marina fence at Freeport Fleetwood, as part of the shopping centre’s Fleetwood Heritage Trail community outreach project.

The educational trail comprises of a series of artworks created by schools, organisations and groups from the area depicting the history of the Fylde Coast. The trail is formed of 22 boards that explore the area’s attractions and commemorate the area’s rich heritage.

Subjects covered by the Fleetwood Heritage Trail include the history of the town, the birth of the fishing industry, birds that can be seen in the area, shipwrecks and famous people from Fleetwood.

The boards have been created by Cardinal Allen High School, Fleetwood Market, The Fleetwood Weekly News, Fisherman’s Friend, Rossall Primary School, The RNLI and The RSPB. Fleetwood Museum also advised staff from Freeport Fleetwood as to where to find historical information for the boards they have also designed for the trail.

The mini heritage attraction has been installed on the marina fence that runs through the Freeport Fleetwood site.  The artwork is a permanent fixture and is accessible, free of charge, during the centre’s opening hours.

John Magee, Centre Manager at Freeport Fleetwood, said: “The area around Freeport Fleetwood has such a rich and interesting history; we wanted to invest in this project to celebrate our heritage with the local community.

“We want to say a big thank you to the schools and organisations for giving up their free time and taking part.  The trail is now open to the public so everyone can come along and appreciate what makes Fleetwood great and hopefully learn a thing or two at the same time.”

Shanna-Marie Smytheman, Detachment Commander from Fleetwood Army Cadets added: “It was a privilege to be part of the heritage trail and to help the community in Fleetwood.”
