Actors recreate World War 1 life on the front line and the home front

18 May 2015

Dramatic re-enactments at Fleetwood Museum will help people to discover what life was like for a front line soldier and his sister back at home.

'Meet the Tommy' tells the story of a typical soldier and 'The Folks Back Home' illustrates what life was like for women making their invaluable contribution to the war on the home front.

Lynn Asghar, Lancashire County Council’s museum manager at Fleetwood Museum, said: "The 'Meet the Tommy' re-enactment shows very visually the experience of war for a soldier. The kit a soldier carried is featured as well as the poignant memories of the importance of being able to keep in contact with loved ones back at home.

"Visitors will also be able to discover more about the contribution women made and how the war affected them through our 'The Folks Back Home' re-enactment.

"Through our character Alice, we'll remember the women who lived through the First World War making great sacrifices and rising to the challenge."

The performances will take place as follows:

Saturday 23 May, 12 noon to 3pm

Saturday 30 May, 12 noon to 3pm

Saturday 6 June, 12 noon to 3pm

Saturday 13 June, 12 noon to 3pm

The events will also give visitors the opportunity to design and create their own embroidered postcards to send home to their family from the war or to make their own 'tommy' tin.

The re-enactments are free to attend but the cost for entrance to Fleetwood Museum will apply of £3 for adults and £2 for concessions. Accompanied children go free.
