Let the Astley adventures begin

Thursday, 28th May 2015

Children will soon get the chance to play on Astley Park’s new themed ‘destination play area’ after it was announced that it will open on Friday 29 May.
Chorley Council will open the much-anticipated play area on Friday afternoon after months of work to improve the play facilities in Astley Park.
The destination play area has been built at the side of the Pavilion and the current smaller play area.  It has a theme of Royalists and Roundheads, with links to Astley Hall, where it is believed Oliver Cromwell once stayed and has sections for younger and older children.
The concept is based on a castle ruin with natural stone to form ‘rooms’, which are linked with footpaths.  The play equipment is spaced throughout and includes slides, climbing stacks, zip wires, swings, a hip-hop see-saw, balance trails, a wall tower and much more.
Councillor Bev Murray, who has responsibility for the Astley complex at Chorley Council and is set to officially open the play area, said: “Everyone is really excited to see the play area finished and open after watching its construction over the last few months.  It looks fantastic and I hope everyone will enjoy creating their own adventures on it.
“As soon as you see the destination area, you will see that it provides a much wider range of play activities and equipment than regular play areas and we hope it will attract lots of local families as well as more users from outside the area.
“Astley Park is important to the people of Chorley and the council is committed to maintaining and improving the facilities across the complex.”
The destination play area will be open all year-round and will be an added attraction at the many events that are planned in Astley Park this summer including:
·         Picnic in the Park on Sunday 5 July
·         Animals in the Park on Saturday 18 July
·         The Chorley Flower Show on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August
·         Theatre in the Park presents Robin Hood the musical on Sunday 16 August
·         Playtime in the Park on Wednesday 27 August
·         Theatre in the Park presents Mr Stink on Saturday 29 August
·         The Axel Scheffler exhibition at Astley Hall and a special Gruffalo event from Saturday 19 September
