Lancashire marks 70 years since VE Day

Friday, 8th May 2015

War veterans from across Lancashire were guests of honour for a special VE Day commemoration event held at County Hall in Preston on Wednesday 6 May.

This year marks 70 years since VE Day, which marks the end of the second world war in Europe.

Guests attending the event at County Hall were greeted by young armed forces cadets, who saluted the veterans before escorting them into the event.

A menu was served using recipes from the 1930s and 40s, along with some musical favourites played by The Albie Hilton Quartet, including some wartime classics.

Many of the staff were dressed in outfits similar to ones seen during wartime including land girls, a housewife, nurse and a Lindy Hopper.

The event was hosted by the chairman of Lancashire County Council, Kevin Ellard, who was joined by senior representatives from the county council, as well as the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Colonel Alan Jolley TD DL; and County Councillor Darren Clifford, the champion for armed forces and veterans.

Kevin Ellard said: "These ladies and gentlemen served their country during World War Two and its right that we should take time to remember what they did.

"Many Lancastrians gave their lives during the war and didn’t see VE Day, so we should take a moment to remember everyone who served their country.

"It's now 70 years on from VE Day, but their courage and sacrifice during that time remains a shining example to each and every generation."
