Follow in the footsteps of World War One soldiers in Lytham

7 July 2015

Lancashire County Council is helping people to discover what life was like for two Lancashire soldiers during World War One.

Staff from its community heritage team will take people on a local history walk in Lytham to follow in the footsteps of two local men, Major Harry Nickson and Private Graham Reece, who both fought in World War One.

The circular walk will take place on Saturday 18 July from 1.30pm to 3pm and starts at Lytham Library.

Fiona McIntyre, Lancashire County Council's community heritage manager, said: "We'll walk around where Harry and Graham and their families lived.

"The walk will help us to understand more about the lives and times of those who fought and died in the conflict and the communities they left behind.

"Harry lived on Clifton Drive and was a volunteer with the Lytham territorials. Graham worked at the popular Seymour Read's grocers shop in Lytham and was a well-known locally because of this.

"The walk should appeal to people of all ages with an interest in local history as well as those who want an insight into what life was like during World War One.

"We'll also take the opportunity to visit Tomlinson's Chemist on Lytham Market Square on the walk, to look at the collection of Victorian medicine and poison bottles on display there."

The walk is free to attend but booking is required as places are limited. Suitable footwear is essential.

Call 0300 123 6703 or call in at Lytham Library to book a place.

Lytham Library is run by the county council's libraries service.
