Vintage Tractor – New Leyland Gateway

29 January 2016

A vintage tractor is set to become the latest gateway feature to welcome visitors to Leyland.

A planning application has been submitted by South Ribble Borough Council to install the tractor at the junction between Schleswig Way, Leyland Lane and Emnie Lane. The tractor would also have a trailer full of flowers and planting.

It follows the Centurion Tank in Farington and the 1938 TL Fire Engine outside the Leyland Hotel as part of a series of heritage vehicles in the council’s “welcome to Leyland” series.

The trio of gateway features celebrate Leyland’s world-renowned industrial and vehicle manufacturing heritage, and the tractor will be the latest addition to the series. There is another gateway feature in the pipeline, details of which will be revealed soon.

South Ribble Borough Council cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration and leisure Councillor Phil Smith said: “The tractor will be a wonderful addition to the borough and really celebrate the proud heritage that Leyland has.

“We’ve heard a lot about new parks, jobs and infrastructure, as well things like the large-scale regeneration of Station Road in Bamber Bridge, but it’s important not to lose site of the little touches which can make significant difference to our identity, the pride we have in our heritage, and our aspirations for the future.

“Our previous gateway features have proven extremely popular, and we’ve been looking at new ones for a while. It’s still early days, as this is subject to receiving planning permission, but it’s a significant step forward for another community improvement.”
