Works started on Markets Quarter project

29 January 2016

Next week will see Phase 1 of the Markets Quarter project begin when contractors start restoration on the historic Fish Market canopy.

The works, taking approximately 4 months, will include refurbishment and painting of cast iron columns and roof structure, along with other required repairs.

The new colour scheme for the columns – a combination of dark and light greys with pewter to pick out the intricate detailing of the ironwork will return the Fish Market canopy to its former glory. The Council is also looking at further enhancing its appearance with improved low-energy lighting to show off the stunning refurbished architecture.

This marks the start on site of the whole Markets Quarter project that will be delivered in phases over the next couple of years. Phase 2 will see the larger 1875 market canopy restored to a similar standard to the Fish Market and pave the way for Phase 3, the building of the new indoor market hall under the restored 1875 canopy with demolition of the current indoor market hall and car park forming Phase 4. The Markets Quarter project culminates in the construction of the landmark cinema, restaurant and car park complex on the site of the current indoor market hall and car park.

Councillor Robert Boswell, Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said:

“We are very excited to see works begin on the multi-million pound Markets Quarter project starting with the restoration of the Fish Market canopy. This is the start of something great for the city centre. The linked phases of the Markets Quarter project are very much part of a package of new development that will lead to the transformation of this area. In turn this revitalised quarter will act as a key catalyst for the regeneration of the wider city centre.

“The Fish Market canopy itself dates from the 1920s and is a wonderful structure and once restored has the potential to become a destination in its own right.

“Whilst the works are underway Fish Market canopy traders will be accommodated under the larger 1875 market canopy where there is enough space for all outdoor and car boot traders. We thank all traders in advance for their understanding and cooperation.”

FPE Site Operations Director, Roger Speakman added: “FPE Site Operations look forward to working on this historic grade II listed cast iron structure for Preston City Council. We aim to utilise our unique skills set attained over a long period of time working on listed structures around the country, to provide a refurbished structure that will last well into the future.”

Mike Horner, from MUSE Developments: “We are very excited to see the Fish Market Canopy restoration works get underway. This represents the physical start on site for the whole Markets Quarter project that culminates with the new multiscreen cinema, restaurant and car park development. We are currently working towards the submission of a planning application for that development in the Spring.
