Of Mice and Men By John Steinbeck

11 February 2016

Live at the Grand Theatre Blackpool 22 – 26 March 2016

Of Mice and Men—the classic tale of humanity, friendship and dreaming big—travels to Blackpool Grand this Easter.

Based on John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella, Of Mice and Men is still topical today, tackling what it means to be human against a backdrop of economic turmoil and migrant labour in Depression-era America.

This moving production by the Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Birmingham Repertory Theatre will star renowned screen and stage actor Dudley Sutton (Lovejoy), alongside a hugely talented cast. The Touring Consortium brings this play to Blackpool Grand in the footsteps of their recent powerful and acclaimed performances of the modern classics Regeneration (2014) and Brave New World (2015).

Displaced and fighting for survival amidst the job losses and economic crisis of the 1930s’ American Great Depression, George and Lennie are two migrant farm workers who go in search of new beginnings. Despite their difficulties, they both have just one dream: to get enough money together to buy a small piece of land and build a home.

After a long and exhausting journey, they arrive at a farm in California seeking work. But they soon find themselves reeling from the fallout of an innocent misunderstanding, which spirals out of control. Now the two men are bound together by friendship, facing an earth-shattering climax…

A spokesperson for the Grand Theatre said,

“We are really excited that the Touring Consortium are bringing Of Mice and Men to Blackpool. This is a really accessible play and couldn’t be more relevant to today’s political climate. Being one of the eight theatres that make up the Touring Consortium is very important for us and for the town. It means that we can bring top-quality drama to Blackpool that can only be seen in a small number of venues outside of London.”

Of Mice and Men is widely regarded as one of the most important works of the twentieth century. For many years, it has been enjoyed as a set text on the high school syllabus, although its expected removal means there could be few chances left to see this story performed on stage.

Live drama and modern literature lovers should not miss this opportunity to see one of the most powerful pieces of contemporary theatre brought to life at Blackpool Grand from Tuesday 22 to Saturday 26 March. Tickets are available from blackpoolgrand.co.uk or by calling 01253 290190.
