Thousands gather for St George’s Day celebrations in Blackburn

25 April 2016

THOUSANDS of visitors turned out to celebrate St George’s Day in style as seven theatrical dragons put on displays around Blackburn Town Centre.

Organised by the Blackburn Business Improvement District (BID), the event ‘Here Be Dragons’ saw young and old turn out for free live theatre and musical performances.

More than 1,000 visitors gathered at venues including Blackburn Market and The Mall Shopping Centre to watch the live displays on Saturday, 23rd April.

The event, which brought together a range of internationally acclaimed production companies in honour of the patron Saint of England, also included street food stalls, a town crier and a visit by the Thwaites Shire Horses.

Star attractions on the day included a 12 foot mechanical bubble blowing dragon, two dragon-riding damsels in distress and a fire-breathing creature.

Manager of the Blackburn BID, Harriet Roberts, said: “The feedback from visitors from a wide area has been amazing and with the weather staying sunny it’s been a great way to celebrate St George’s Day in grand style across the town centre.”

Other events on the day included a fairground organ, the distribution of roses by the Royal Society of St George and a performance by Stacksteads Brass Band and the Masters of Martial Arts Academy.
