Back to Back with the Bard

27 June 2016

To mark the 400th anniversary of the world’s most famous playwright, there have been a number of Bard related events throughout the region. Back in April, Morecambe saw the “Bard By The Beach” celebrations and in Lancaster the Judges’ Lodgings held a day of family themed activities.

Now Leighton Hall gets its turn to celebrate this monumental year by presenting one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays – Hamlet.

Taking place on the 21st and 22nd  July, Hamlet sees Leighton Hall’s beautiful gardens transformed into an alfresco theatre for two consecutive nights, giving even more Shakespeare fans the chance to witness this popular production, in a completely unique way.

The Festival Players are no stranger to the beautiful back drop that Leighton’s grounds and garden provide. They’ve brought their travelling theatre to the Carnforth historic house for over 20 years, but this is the first time they’ve done the same play two nights running.

Hamlet contains some of Shakespeare’s most famous quotes “To be or not to be” and “To thine own self be true” and is known as the greatest tragedy in the English language.  With a small all male cast of engaging characters and original songs performed live during the show, this 2 hour outdoor event is the perfect way to enjoy Shakespeare this summer.

Festival Players Artistic Director Michael Dyer said “Hamlet is a long play but we’ve managed to cut it down to two hours and performing in Leighton’s beautiful gardens with great music brings Shakespeare into everyone’s comfort zone! Our audience feels very much part of the production and it’s an accessible format that works”

Rain or shine, both shows starts at 7:30pm but Leighton’s grounds open at 6pm giving visitors plenty of time to relax, open the deckchairs, cool boxes and champers, enjoy their picnics and really make a night of it.
