Beatrix Potter celebrated at Gawthorpe Hall

18 July 2016

Gawthorpe Hall will be recognising the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth with themed family activities on Thursday 28 July.

The activities include a fun trail to find bunnies hidden around the museum and storytelling.

A Beatrix Potter quilt, loaned from the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection in the library, will be on display.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: "As part of a national celebration, visitors to Gawthorpe Hall will be able to enjoy some entertaining activities to celebrate Beatrix on the 150th anniversary of her birth.

"Beatrix is one of the world's best-loved children's authors, who has captured our imagination for over 100 years with her beautifully illustrated tales. Beatrix was also an artist, botanist, environmentalist, farmer and businesswoman.

"Children will be able to learn about her, and have lots of fun.

"The Beatrix Potter quilt will also be on display. This was made between 1935 to 1960, and all of the main characters are embroidered on it. It is very rare that this is on display, so the event provides a good opportunity to be able to see it.

"The event also provides a chance to have a look at Gawthorpe Hall's library, which only opens occasionally to the public .

"On a personal level, as I'm the county councillor for Padiham and I live close to Gawthorpe Hall, I'm always really pleased to see such interesting exhibitions hosted there."

The storytelling will take place hourly during the afternoon.

The activities are free, but admission to Gawthorpe Hall costs £4 for adults and £3 for concessions. National Trust members and children go free.

There is no need to book in advance.
