Blackpool Transport says farewell to Olympeans

19 July 2016

Blackpool Transport’s Volvo Olympean’s, which are the last 6 step entrance buses in its fleet will be withdrawn from service after Saturday 23rd July 2016.

The six Volvo Olympean’s, which arrived in November 1994 have operated on various routes and have seen numerous livery’s over the years. More recently, five of the six iconic double decker vehicles have largely been used on school contract services.

Saturday 23rd July 2016 will mark the withdrawal of Blackpool Transport's final five step entrance buses, with at least 3 of these vehicles operating on the Service 1 route throughout the day. This is your chance to take one last journey on these buses before they are permanently retired.

The buses will operate as part of the standard service from Starr Gate to Fleetwood Freeport, with normal fares and timetables in operation throughout the day.

Bob Mason, Service Delivery Director for Blackpool Transport said “The decision to withdraw these buses from service will mean that our entire fleet will be fully DDA compliant by July 2016, well before the December 31st 2016 deadline. For any enthusiasts it’s a great opportunity to take one final journey on these vehicles”.

Any pictures of these buses in operation on their final day of service can be sent in to Blackpool Transport using the hashtag #OlympeanFarewell – with the best being in with a chance of featuring on the Blackpool Transport website.
