Gawthorpe Hall summer fun

26 July 2016

Families looking for holiday fun this summer should head for Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, near Burnley.

On Thursday 28 July, as part of a national celebration, Gawthorpe Hall will be recognising the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth with themed family activities.

The activities include a fun trail to find bunnies hidden around the museum, and storytelling.

A Beatrix Potter quilt, loaned from the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection in the library, will be on display. This was made between 1935 to 1960, and all of the main characters are embroidered on it.

The Gawthorpe Hall library will also be open, giving visitors a rare opportunity to visit.

These activities are free, and there is no need to book in advance.

On Friday 29 July, visitors will be enchanted by a performance of 'Zorro', by Off The Ground Theatre.

This family-oriented production tells the story of the fictional Spanish legendary hero, Zorro, in his fight to stop the evil Ramon family from turning his beloved townspeople against him.

The show will start at 6.30pm and visitors are asked to bring their own chairs as this is an outdoor performance. The gates will open at 5.30pm for anyone bringing a picnic along, but there will also be hot refreshments available for purchase.

Off The Ground Theatre believe in giving as many people as possible the opportunity to take part in theatre. Their tours employ many young people and work with schools, community groups and theatre companies.

Tickets for this performance are available on the night, or in advance from www.offtheground.org.uk.

Every Wednesday throughout August, this popular museum will host 'Craftanoons' for children. Activities range from a teddy bears' picnic, a chance to design and make your own badge, to pond dipping, wildlife trails and pebble painting.

There's no need to book and the activities will run from 1pm to 4pm. There will be a cost of £2 for each child taking part.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: "I'm really impressed by the events that are being held at Gawthorpe Hall.

"Children will be able to learn and have lots of fun, and adults will be greatly entertained.

"On a personal level, as I'm the county councillor for Padiham and I live close to Gawthorpe Hall, I'm always really pleased to see such interesting activities hosted there."

All children must be supervised by an adult for all of the activities.

Admission to Gawthorpe Hall costs £4 for adults and £3 for concessions. National Trust members and children go free. Costs also apply for some of the activities.
