UK’s largest free walking festival in Pendle launched with short film

9 August 2016

A new short film showcasing Pendle’s stunning landscape has been produced for the UK’s largest free walking festival which starts on Saturday 13 August.

The week-long Festival which runs until Sunday 21 August includes 71 free guided walks for all levels of walkers including a great choice of walks suitable for families.

“The Pendle Walking Festival highlights some fascinating glimpses of Pendle’s history,” explained Pendle’s Tourism Officer Mike Williams.

It includes Pendle’s little-known Brontë connections as this year is the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth in 1816.

“There are walks in our Festival programme which take people to atmospheric places like Wycoller and explain the area’s links with Charlotte’s most famous novel, Jane Eyre,” said Mike.

“We’re also celebrating the Leeds and Liverpool Canal's 200th birthday,” he said.

“That’s why we’ve included walks which explore the most picturesque stretches with walk leaders who can explain its compelling history.

“We’ve also got a walk combined with lunch and a boat trip,” he added.

The full programme of guided walks is on www.visitpendle.com.

And the video, created for Pendle Council by Clitheroe film maker Graham Kay of Fully Formed films, can be watched via www.visitpendle.com and on Vimeo  https://vimeo.com/169930177

Pendle’s leader for tourism, Councillor Eileen Ansar said:
“Visitors are amazed by our breath-taking countryside and the Pendle Walking Festival showcases it superbly.

“Thanks to this new short film, people can get a preview before they come!

Mike added: “This is the 12th year of our Pendle Walking Festival which started from humble beginnings and is now the biggest free walking festival in the UK.”

Walks in this year’s Festival include:

  • Challenge walks like the country's newest long distance route, The Lancashire Witches Way, from Pendle to Lancaster in stages
  • Pendle’s Three Peaks –  a one day challenge walk tackling Pendle, Weets and Boulsworth Hills
  • A 6 ½ mile walk covering the history of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Pendle
  • A 4 mile canal walk which includes a cruise along the canal
  • A 3 mile ghosts, myths and legends walk including tales which inspired Charlotte Brontë.

Councillor Eileen Ansar added:

“Our festival is not just national, it’s international!”

“People come from far and wide to enjoy some of the most stunning countryside views in the north of England.

“But we’re encouraging local residents to lace up their boots too and find out more about the beautiful countryside on their doorsteps.
