A Coastal Community Team for Morecambe Bay

23 January 2017

Morecambe Bay Partnership and South Lakeland District Council are delighted to announce success for Morecambe Bay in the latest round of Coastal Community Teams announced today by the Coastal Communities Minister Andrew Percy.

Coastal Community Teams are supported by government to help revive coastal towns and areas and to develop and deliver plans for future economic growth.  118 teams already exist around the Great British Coast and the announcement of a further 28 in this round will see even more coastal communities being given the opportunity to design bespoke recovery and growth plans.

The award will mean £10,000 will be granted to help partners in Morecambe Bay to develop an economic plan to support jobs and growth for communities around the Bay.

This new team for Morecambe Bay will be led by Morecambe Bay Partnership and South Lakeland District Council and will bring together local people, councils and businesses in the area to decide where investment and action is needed to grow the rural and coastal economy.  Plans will tap into our local heritage and stunning coastal assets and develop local skills and opportunities to benefit from new jobs and investment.

The Partnership will work closely with the existing teams and groups in the area, and will be building on over two decades of partnership work. Two further teams are being announced in this round – at Morecambe & Heysham and Cleveleys, meaning that, together with existing teams the Bay will have full Coastal Community Team coverage, presenting a unique opportunity to work together and make Morecambe Bay a thriving economy.

The economic plan for Morecambe Bay will be developed over the next 2/3 months and will involve wide consultation with communities, councils and business.  The final plan has to be submitted to government by the end of March 2017.
