Taste of Leyland holds recipe for success

Give your taste-buds a treat this Bank Holiday weekend and take them on a round-the-world tour – in Leyland.

The town’s third annual culinary offering – Taste of Leyland – will embrace everything from Japanese and Cantonese cuisine through to dishes from India and Mexico as well as a mobile pizza kitchen, making its first appearance at a major food event.

There will even be a chance to sample a bespoke beer, Truck Trail Ale, which has been specially brewed to mark the success of its namesake.

Haydn Williams, owner of Crankshaft Brewery on Moss Side Industrial Estate, said the pale brew was also a celebration of his business’s first birthday after its successful launch at last year’s Taste of Leyland.

Haydn said that after selling all of the 200 bottles of beer he brought last year he was planning to bring extra this time. The ale will also be on sale in the run-up to the event at the Market Ale House in Leyland.

Martin Stringfellow, and his brother Dave, from The Flying Pig Pizza Company, will also be contributing their own unique offering in the shape of pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven and served up from their customised van.

He said: “This is a new venture for us both, and so we’re a bit nervous but also excited about what will be our first major event.”

The extreme temperatures used in the wood-fired oven give a whole new meaning to fast food, with a pizza cooking in under a minute.

The event, on Saturday, August 26, will see Balfour Court and Leyland Market transformed into a food court, with stalls and seating where visitors can enjoy lunch, snacks and tastings from 10am to 4pm.

As well as showcasing Leyland’s food and drink producers and retailers, including the town’s newest business, Safia’s Dream Desserts, the day will offer children’s entertainment, face painting, singing, and recipe ideas.

Leyland Town Team will also be hosting the ‘Shop Local’ tombola stall with an opportunity to win market vouchers and giveaways. Money raised will be donated to the Christmas Light-Up Leyland campaign.

Cllr Phil Smith, Cabinet Member of Regeneration and Leisure, said: “What better way to spend the Bank Holiday than sampling the great tastes that we have on offer in Leyland?

“This year we have the added bonus of the Truck Trail, which offers the perfect way to work up an appetite.

“We’re very lucky here in Leyland to have such diversity when it comes to food – from locally grown ingredients and hand-made products to quality food retailers and great restaurants.

“I would urge everyone to keep it local this Bank Holiday and enjoy what is on offer on their doorstep.”

Leaflets containing a map of the Truck Trail and participating shops are available from Leyland Railway Station, the Civic Centre, Paces and Laces, Leyland Market and various food stores in town.
