Discover Lancashire in 70 objects

29 August 2017

Items from Lancashire County Council museums feature as part of a new project, which aims to tell the history of the county through artefacts at 70 venues across the region.

‘A History of Lancashire in 70 Objects’ has been brought together by a partnership of Lancashire County Council, Museum Development North West and Lancashire Life magazine. It has been funded by a Heritage Lottery Grant of £55,000.

The items selected for display were chosen with the help of the public, who were asked to pick objects they think are important to the history of the county palatine.

A dugout boat at Lancaster Maritime Museum, the Statue of Justice at Lancaster Castle, and a child’s shoe at Clitheroe Castle have all been selected as part of the collection.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “This is a fascinating project, highlighting some often lesser-known objects, which are nevertheless important for what they can tell us about Lancashire’s history.

“The county’s history goes beyond its current borders and the collection features artefacts in museums across the traditional Lancashire palatine area, including Liverpool and Greater Manchester.

“It’s a great reason to visit venues you might not usually go to.”

The artefacts will be exhibited until the end of November at their usual venues. The project is part of celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of Lancashire Life magazine.

The exhibition is supported by a free family trail, which can either by picked up from any of the venues that are taking part, or downloaded at lancashirelife.co.uk/topic/Tag/Lancashire70
