Winter Gardens Announces New Art Competition

The Winter Gardens Blackpool is offering talented artists the chance to create a two-dimensional piece of work in a competition launching a year of special events to mark an anniversary for the iconic venue.

Entries are open now to professional and amateur artists of all ages the submitted piece can be a painting, sketch, print or photo which follows the theme, “The Winter Gardens 2018 – celebrating 140 years of entertainment”.

There will be two age categories, for those under 16 years or 16 and over, and while the competition hopes to attract many of the Blackpool’s local artists it is also open across the UK and Internationally.

As part of the prize, the winners will receive an engraved glass trophy and tickets to a Gala Dinner in the Empress Ballroom in July this year. All shortlisted entries will be on display at an exhibition in the Derham Lounge at the venue in the first week of July.

Michael Williams, managing director of Blackpool Entertainment Centres, who operate the Winter Gardens on behalf of owners Blackpool Council said,“The competition marks the start of what’s set to be an incredible year of events for the Winter Gardens Blackpool, 140th anniversary. Such an anniversary is testament to the vision and aspiration of those who helped create the venue and all those since who have ensured the venue remains at the forefront of the Blackpool offer. The Winter Gardens Blackpool is the people’s palace and this competition will allow individuals to express what the venue means to them.”

The Winter Gardens Trust are supporting the competition and the celebration events, spokesman David Gore added, “This is a wonderful opportunity for artists to be associated with the Winter Gardens and it would be a great honour to be named as the winner. This has always been a special place to those who visit and come away with fantastic memories so we look forward to seeing how the entrants capture the magic of the venue.”
