Investment in new heritage lighting for Lytham
Lytham’s beloved Clifton Street is set to shine as the installation of 26 beautiful new heritage lighting columns gets underway this week. Lancashire County Council commenced works to replace the lighting columns on Monday 16 March, working from east to west along Clifton Street. This landmark investment will celebrate the area’s rich heritage while creating a more vibrant and welcoming town centre for residents, visitors and businesses alike.

The elegant new columns will feature ornate infill panels showcasing the Clifton family crest alongside oak and elm leaves, honouring Lytham’s heritage and natural character. Lighting columns will carry flower baskets and banners, including specially commissioned designs created by children from Lytham’s primary schools, bringing colour, creativity and community spirit to the street throughout the year. Power sockets on each column will also give Lytham Town Council added flexibility during events and seasonal celebrations.
This exciting phase follows the successful completion of tree canopy pruning works earlier this year, where 28 of Clifton Street’s trees had their canopies reduced by 20% – finished on time and to plan – paving the way for the lighting installation to begin.
Fylde Council has worked closely with residents and businesses along Clifton Street throughout the planning process, making direct contact with those affected by the works. Comprehensive traffic and pedestrian management measures will be in place throughout the project to keep everyone safe, while maintaining access to shops and homes.
Councillor Karen Buckley, Leader of Fylde Council, said: “This is a bold and beautiful investment in the heart of Lytham. The new lighting will not only brighten our streets but celebrate our town’s heritage with elegance and pride. Combined with expert care for our much-loved trees, this project will create a welcoming, characterful space that supports local businesses and invites people to linger, shop and enjoy. It’s about honouring our past while investing in our future.”
Councillor Catherine Powell of Lytham Town Council added: “Clifton Street is the beating heart of Lytham, and this investment will make it more beautiful, welcoming and vibrant than ever. I’m particularly delighted that local primary school children have played a part in bringing these new columns to life – it’s a lovely way to connect the next generation with the town they call home. This is a real moment for Lytham, and I can’t wait to see our community enjoying the finished result.”
The improvements are designed to support the town centre environment and contribute positively to the local economy, creating a distinctive and characterful streetscape that Lytham residents can be proud of for years to come.
