Celebrations at opening of Darwen’s new Youth Zone

24 April 2026

More than 1,500 people turned out to celebrate the official opening of Darwen’s brand-new Youth Zone at a special community fun day. The highly anticipated launch took place on Saturday, 18 April 2026, giving residents a first chance to explore the impressive new state-of-the-art facility in the heart of the town centre. The event itself was supported by the Darwen Pride in Place programme, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

The Youth Zone has been delivered through funding from the Government’s Youth Investment Fund (YIF), alongside support from the Council, and is part of almost £10m of new investment in facilities for young people right across the borough. The striking new building, which has taken shape over the past year, is more than double the size of the previous youth centre.

Now open, it will operate seven days a week – including evenings, weekends and school holidays – offering a safe, inclusive space for young people to spend their time. Members can enjoy a wide range of facilities, including a games cave, recording studio, salon, gym, a version of the popular Making Rooms creative space, and outdoor sports areas.

The opening event brought together young people, families, community partners and local businesses, all eager to check out the new facility. Visitors were able to take part in activities, offering a glimpse of what will become a central hub for youth provision in Darwen. More than just a building, the Youth Zone has been designed as a welcoming environment where young people can build confidence, develop new skills, form friendships and access vital support services.

The development has also been made possible through the support of the Youth Zone’s patrons, including businesses from right across Blackburn with Darwen, whose contributions will continue to play a key role in its success.

Leon Crosby, Chief Executive Officer of Blackburn and Darwen Youth Zone and a member of the Darwen Town Board, said: “The opening of Darwen Youth Zone is a major milestone for the town and its young people.

“It provides a safe, inspiring environment where they can develop new skills, build
friendships and access the support they need to reach their full potential.

“We’re excited to see how this space grows with the community and supports
generations of young people in Darwen for years to come.”

Membership is now open, with young people invited to sign up and take advantage of the centre’s unique offer, including free membership, free entry and a free hot meal at every session. By removing barriers to access, the Youth Zone aims to ensure that all young people in Darwen can benefit from the opportunities on offer.
