Phase 2 of the Market Quarter Project Takes Shape

22 April 2016

FPE Global Ltd has been awarded the contract by Preston City Council to restore the larger 1875 Market canopy.

Restoration will take approximately 6 months and will be completed in three phases to ensure continuity of business for the Outdoor and Car Boot and Flea Market traders. Works will include refurbishment and painting of cast iron columns and roof structure along with other required repairs to the same standard as have recently been taking place on the Fish Market canopy.

The new colour scheme for the columns – a combination of dark and light greys with pewter, the same as those used on the Fish Market – will pick out the intricate detailing of the ironwork along with a red to highlight the flowers in the ironworks below the roof edge providing a striking contrast. The Council is also looking at further enhancing its appearance with improved low-energy lighting to show off the stunning refurbished architecture.

Restoration of the larger Market Canopy marks Phase 2 of the Markets Quarter project which will be delivered in phases over the next couple of years. FPE Global are currently working towards the completion of Phase 1 – the restoration of the Fish Market canopy which started at the beginning of the year and is set to be back in use in May. Building of the new indoor market hall, under the restored 1875 canopy, marks Phase 3 with demolition of the current indoor market hall and car park forming Phase 4. The Markets Quarter project culminates in the construction of the landmark cinema, restaurant and car park complex on the site of the current indoor market hall and car park.

Adrian Phillips, Director of Environment said;

“We are pleased to announce FPE will be continuing with the great work they have done on the Fish Market Canopy on the larger 1875 Market Canopy.

The work undertaken on the Fish Market canopy has been of the highest quality and we look forward to FPE continuing with this standard of work over the next 6 months so traders, customers and the people of Preston can enjoy both these iconic structures restored to their former glory.”

FPE Global Site Operations Director, Roger Speakman added;

“FPE Global is delighted to be awarded the contract for the refurbishment of the historic Grade II listed 1875 Market canopy following on from our work on restoring the Fish Market canopy for Preston City Council. We will continue to utilise our unique skills set attained over a long period of time working on listed structures around the country, to provide a refurbished structure that will last well into the future and complementing the nearly completed Fish Market Canopy.”
