Warning! Dragons set to invade Blackburn

Five theatrical dragons will invade Blackburn Town Centre to celebrate St George’s Day on Saturday, 23rd April.

‘Here Be Dragons’ organised by Blackburn’s Business Improvement District, invites visitors to follow the dragons’ trail for free live theatre and musical performances with human size puppet actors.

The line-up, which brings together a range of internationally acclaimed production companies, includes shows in The Mall, Blackburn Market and on the Cathedral Grounds.

‘The Dragon Who Lost His Home’ from Pendle Productions will be presenting a musical theatre show at Victoria Court inside The Mall Blackburn at 11am, 12pm, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

Jelly Rollers will present ‘George the Dragon’, a 12 foot, musical, mechanical bubble blowing dragon outside Blackburn Market between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

‘The Dragon-Riding Damsels in Distress’ from Swank Theatre are on a constant futile crusade to find their knights in shining armour and other princes and princesses along the way. Visitors can see the duo in The Mall Blackburn at 10.30am and 11.30am.

‘Dragon Quest’ from Circo Rum Ba Ba, a well-established circus theatre company, will bring magic and mythology to Blackburn Market at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Creature Encounters, will also display their big, bright and beautiful dragon ‘Epico’ on the Cathedral Gardens from 3pm until 4pm.

All the dragons will be together on Church Street for photographs with visitors between 1pm and 1.30pm.

Other activities on the day include a visit by the Thwaites Shire Horses, the distribution of roses by the Royal Society of St George, a performance by Stacksteads Brass Band, a town crier, roundabouts and rides, street food stalls, fairground organs and free St George’s Day crafts in the Market.

Manager of the Blackburn BID, Harriet Roberts, said: “Visitors can celebrate St George’s Day in style with this free family-fun event. The BID has secured almost every performing dragon in the country and it will be a thrilling day for everyone taking part or watching.”
