WWT Martin Mere to host North West Puddle Jumping Championships

9 February 2015

February half term will see WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre play host to the first ever North West’s Puddle Jumping Championships. From the 14th to the 22nd February wrap up warm, grab your wellies and jump into the puddles for a chance to win prizes. Puddles will be available all day for that essential practice before the competition starts at 2pm.

It’s only 50p to enter and every entrant will receive a badge for taking part in this event, with the each daily winner going into a draw to win the grand prize of a weekend away to take part in the World Puddle Jumping Championships at Wicksteed Park this October half term.

The lucky winner will also receive an annual family pass (two adults and two children) to Wicksteed Park allowing them to take part in the many attractions and rides on offer such as The Waterchute and The Pirate Ship. So come on down and take part, all ages and abilities are welcome to join in.
Also at Martin Mere this February half term, The Yuk Show: ‘Bizarre Bodies’ will take a trip into the unusual. Discover the weird and mysterious creatures that live on this earth, such as the cereal beetle which covers its only bottle with toxic poo or the Lake Titicaca Frog which has loose skin covering its whole body, wearing it like a baggy suit.  This journey into the bizarre world of creatures will last 40 minutes and takes place twice a day Monday to Friday. Get your free ticket from the information desk any time during February half term to attend. After the talk why not create your own creepy crawly or bizarre bug out of recyclable material in the Wigeon Room between 1pm and 4pm for just £1.

Visit the Pond House to create your own nest box, classes will be held in both the morning and the afternoon and cost just £5.99 to make per box as well as letting the kids run wild in the Adventure playground.

WWT Martin Mere is a haven for a host of creatures such as otters, beavers and swans. Watch birds from the shelter of our comfortable hides or enjoy an expert walk or talk. There’s certainly a lot to do at Martin Mere all year round.

WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre is open every day (except Christmas Day) from 9.30am to 4.30pm during winter months and parking is free of charge. Situated off the A59, it is signposted from the M61, M58 and M6.  The Centre is also accessible via the Southport to Manchester and the Liverpool to Preston line by train from Burscough Rail Stations.  Visit the web site http://www.wwt.org.uk/martinmere/ to find out what’s on all year round at Martin Mere and the other eight WWT Wetland Centres.
