Major improvements completed at Garstang’s historic Market House
Wyre Council is delighted to announce the successful completion of major improvement works at Market House in Garstang, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The project, led by Garstang Town Trust, has transformed the historic building, creating a more comfortable, attractive, and energy‑efficient space for traders, visitors, and the local community.

Market House, which has been central to Garstang’s market tradition for over 300 years, has benefitted from a significant package of works designed to enhance the experience for all who use it.
Improvements include:
- New automated glazed sliding doors to improve accessibility and heat retention
- A fully replaced and insulated slate roof with upgraded internal finishes
- Installation of rooflights to maximise natural daylight
- Provision for photovoltaic (solar) panels to support the site’s transition to low carbon energy
- Conservation led redecoration of the historic internal timber trusses
These upgrades address longstanding challenges caused by the building’s age and exposure to the elements. The refurbished interior is now brighter, warmer, and better protected, enabling the Trust to extend use of the space and host a wider range of events, activities and community initiatives throughout the year.
To celebrate the completion of the works, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Tuesday 10 March, attended by councillors and officers from Wyre Council, Councillor Elizabeth Webster, Mayor of Garstang, town councillors, members of the Greater Garstang Partnership and trustees from Garstang Town Trust.
Attendees were given a tour of the enhanced space and heard how the improvements will support the long-term sustainability of the market and wider High Street. The event highlighted the strong partnership between the council and the Trust in bringing this project to fruition.
Councillor Peter Le Marinel, Planning Policy and Economic Development Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council said:
“We’re delighted to see these works completed. Market House is an important landmark in Garstang and a key driver of footfall on the High Street. This UKSPF investment improves the experience for traders and shoppers alike, protects a historic community asset and supports the ongoing vitality of the town centre.”
This project delivers on Wyre Council’s corporate priorities for Growth and Prosperity, and Place and Climate. It reflects our commitment to creating thriving, welcoming town centres, and championing innovative approaches that help reduce carbon emissions. By improving a valued community asset, supporting local economic activity, and incorporating low carbon solutions, the successful project reinforces our ambition to help residents, businesses and communities contribute to a more sustainable future.
Garstang Town Trust has contributed match funding and significant volunteer hours to the project, demonstrating strong local ownership and commitment to preserving and enhancing the town’s historic assets.
The improvements further support the Trust’s ambition to encourage local entrepreneurship, attract new traders, and provide opportunities for young people interested in business and market trading. Market House continues to grow in popularity with visitors, including those with access needs, and now offers an enhanced and more inclusive environment for all.
This project received £120,261 from the UK Government through UKSPF.
