First Acts Revealed for Blackpool’s 2014 Switch-On

The first acts for Blackpool’s 2014 Switch-On night can be revealed today.

Chart stars Pixie Lott, Union J, Neon Jungle, George Ezra and Matt Cardle will join what is going to be a star-studded line up on Friday 29 August on the Tower Festival Headland.

The Friday night Switch-On, which is being staged in association with media partner Rock FM, marks the start of a three-day festival of entertainment; it has already been announced that the West End themed Saturday night will be headlined by Thriller Live and the Sunday night concert will be headlined by Rebecca Ferguson.

The headline musical act and the celebrity Switch-On star for the Friday will be revealed over the next couple of weeks. The acts named today have all achieved considerable chart and touring success in their own right:

Pixie Lott has twice topped the singles charts. She supported Rihanna and The Saturdays on their UK tours and has a new album out in August.

Boy band Union J headlined their own tour last year after finishing fourth in the X Factor final.

Neon Jungle have charted in both this country and America. They supported Jessie J on her UK tour, and performed at the Victoria Secret Fashion show in America.

George Ezra played the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury last summer and his latest song “Budapest” is currently receiving extensive air play and is being widely tipped as the song of the summer.

Matt Cardle won the X Factor in 2010 and his first single went straight to number one. He is now on his third album.

Early bird tickets for the entire festival weekend are priced at just £20 for adults, £10 per child, with the first 5,000 purchasers guaranteed a wristband for the free Friday night Switch-On event.

Cllr Graham Cain, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure at Blackpool Council, said: "We are delighted to be able to name the first list of stars who will perform on Switch-On night. They will join what is going to be a fantastic line up over the three days.

“We expect to be able to announce the celebrity Switch-On star before the end of June. It all promises to be a weekend to remember.”

The Friday night acts join a weekend line-up which already includes Thriller Live, Chicago, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and excerpts from The Jersey Boys on the Saturday night, as well as Rebecca Ferguson, Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, 911 and Damage on the Sunday night.

Entrance to this year’s free Friday night Switch-On will be strictly by wristband only and there will be no wristbands available on the day. Wristbands will be allocated at random through an online ballot with a maximum of four wristbands per household. A total of 6,000 of these will be allocated to applicants from the Blackpool area.

Wristband registration closes at 12 noon on Wednesday 23 July 2014 and successful applicants will be notified on Tuesday 29 July 2014. To register, go to
