Lancashire Commemorates World War One

14 May 2014

Marketing Lancashire, the county’s destination management organisation, has provided a platform on the company’s top performing visitor website for the county’s many events marking the centenary of World War One 1914-1918, following a request from the pan–Lancashire WW1 Commemorative Group for a single resource for events and local information related to the 100th anniversary.

The group, led by Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire Lord Shuttleworth, comprises representatives of all Lancashire districts, the armed forces, regimental museums and a wide variety of organisations with links to the military and associated services.

The new website, accessed directly at or via, provides a date–ordered listing of WW1 events that will be taking place over the next four years, links to local community and museum projects, as well as to national searchable databases such as the Forces War Records and War Memorials Archive.

On the site Lord Shuttleworth comments “This year, along with so many communities across the world,  the people of Lancashire will be commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War. Hundreds of events, stretching over the next four years, will mark this life-changing period in our history and it is our duty to make sure that Lancastrians today understand the impact war made on families and friends across the county.

“This website has been created to help residents and visitors find the many memorials, exhibitions, events and projects taking place, so that they too can understand and honour those who gave their lives for our country and way of life.  Please visit the website, upload your events and share your family history. Lest we forget.”

All groups hosting events linked to the commemoration can add these directly into the site at

Once checked, these are added to the live stream of events, providing a useful single location for residents and visitors searching for opportunities to mark and take part in this hugely significant centenary. With over 1.2million unique visitors each year, will help raise awareness of the county’s commemorations.

Ruth Connor, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire comments “Marketing Lancashire is very proud and honoured to host on the visitlancashire website.

“We hope that residents as well as visitors, who lost family and friends from Lancashire in the First World War, will use the site to find events, memorials and projects around the county. It’s vital that we keep our local histories alive and demonstrate our gratitude to Lancashire’s fallen.”

The website also features a Flickr gallery entitled ‘We Remember’ where people can share family photographs, memorabilia or pictures of Lancashire during the First World War.   #LancashireWW1
