Preston City Council will mark Refugee Week with a series of virtual events alongside Uclan and Preston City of Sanctuary. The events, to be hosted online due to ongoing restrictions caused by coronavirus, will celebrate positive encounters between different communities with a focus on arts, culture and education.

Adrian Phillips, Chief Executive of Preston City Council, said:

“Preston is proud to support refugees and we have worked closely with organisations such as the Red Cross to support people fleeing desperate situations in countries such as Syria.

“We’re proud to be part of Refugee Week and hope these events, kindly coordinated by Councillor Nweeda Khan, will be an opportunity to bring people together in a celebration of culture.”

Preston City of Sanctuary was established three years ago to support refugees who have started a new life in Preston.

The organisation provides newly settled refugees with access to advice and support from community organisations to help them build a new life in Preston.

The events, held online, will include a networking meeting as well as a session on maintaining mental wellbeing and resilience.
