John Pye returns to his Lancashire roots as the Project Director of Eden Project Morecambe

I’m well versed in local and regional knowledge and the passion that Lancastrians have for truly positive change.”

Earlier this year Eden Project Morecambe announced that John Pye would be joining the team as Project Director. The first official employee of Eden Project Morecambe Ltd, John will soon be joined by colleagues across finance, communications, project delivery and engagement, following the recent announcement of a number of exciting new job opportunities.

John started his new role in May, equipped with decades of specialist knowledge and experience of the successful delivery of major projects that match the scale of the new Eden Project Morecambe; his most recent role being the delivery of the acclaimed RHS Bridgewater Scheme.

John is also delighted to be back in his native Lancashire, where he grew up in Winmarleigh, before moving to Broughton near Preston.  He fondly recalls his time at the small village primary school in Winmarleigh, where he was the only pupil in his year – so for that reason he was top, and equally bottom, of the class at the same time, which required a certain level of self-determination to work hard from a very early age.

Much of John’s career has been spent in the North West, with his first role after gaining project management qualifications at the National Trust in South Manchester. He then worked for Lancaster University as Project Manager and Acting Head of Capital Projects, before becoming Project Director at Blackpool and The Fylde College.

As Project Director of Eden Project Morecambe, John is charged with delivery of all aspects of this exciting environmental project, which will sit proudly on Morecambe seafront. From design, construction, fit-out and operations, John will be working with an amazing design and delivery team to ensure Eden, its partners and the community enjoy the very best possible outcomes and benefits from this new visitor attraction and environmental resource.

When we caught up with John, he spoke about his excitement for the Morecambe project and how it compares to the delivery of the RHS Garden Bridgewater, which was a particular career highlight for him, having seen the project from inception to its place as a key North West visitor attraction.

“The Eden Project Morecambe is another amazing project, like RHS Bridgewater, that will focus on the positive social, health and economic benefits that a transformational world-class project can deliver…. but with a bit of Eden magic thrown in!”

“I’ve worked in Lancashire most of my career, so I’m well versed in local and regional knowledge and the passion that Lancastrians have for truly positive change.”

John also added that there isn’t anything quite like Morecambe Bay “on a glorious summer’s day, or crisp winter evening it really takes some beating, particularly when the Lake District makes an appearance in the distance.”

Eden Project Morecambe is expected to open in 2028 as Lancashire’s newest landmark visitor attraction; one that inspires positive action for the planet and connects people to the natural and marine world. It will be located on the central promenade of Morecambe, overlooking the spectacular beauty of Morecambe Bay, close to other significant attractions including The Midland and the Winter Gardens.
