Burnley Council receives Arts Council backing for the 2017 Literary Festival

1 September 2017

Burnley Council is delighted to announce it has been awarded just over £9,000 from the Arts Council England (ACE) towards the 2017 Burnley Literary Festival.

Burnley’s Town Centre Manager, Catherine Price, applied to the Arts Council earlier this year for support for this year’s Literary Festival and she’s delighted to have once again secured funding for the event.

Following the success of the first Burnley Literary Festival last year, the ACE funding will ensure the event can grow and offer an even more diverse programme for 2017.

For four days from Friday 6th October to Monday 9th October Burnley Town Centre will be transformed into a literary lover’s dream as Burnley welcomes writers, performers and poets a to help us celebrate the joy of the written word.

The festival will provide the opportunity to meet your favourite literary characters, award-winning authors, amazing storytellers, and take in colourful shows which will bring books to life. There will also be fun creative workshops, interactive film showings, with something for all the family.

Brian Hobbs, director Trinity Group and president of Burnley and District Chamber of Trade, said: “An event like Burnley Literary festival has two key influences on our town centre. It brings access to ‘literature’ to our regular town centre users some of whom have never engaged with literary events before and so is a fresh and new experience for them. It also brings in new visitors, people who already have a passion for literature but who may not be regular town centre visitors.

So via one event we can add to the activity and vibrancy of our town centre by providing an attraction for those already literature engaged and a new experience for those that aren’t.”

Councillor Sue Graham, Executive Member for Regeneration & Planning Policy said: “We are delighted to have been awarded funding from the Arts Council, who recognise the importance of the Burnley Literary Festival in getting more people engaged with books and literature.

“The Literary Festival will deliver events around reading and books; poetry; performance & drama, film and culture which will take places across Burnley Town Centre. It is a great way to nurture and showcase cultural talent in the local area and the Arts Council support will help us to promote the event to a wider audience and deliver an exciting programme of activity for schools and other groups in Burnley.

“It’s a wonderful event for the town which we hope will attract new visitors and promote the joy of reading to people of all ages, and the council is working in closely with members of the Town Centre Partnership and retailers to co-ordinate the event.  The aim is to also increase educational attainment levels and attract new booksellers to the town centre.”
